of our favorite downtown Standing like a sentinel over historic downtown Jim Thorpe is the landmark clock tower of the county courthouse. This area, once known as Market Square, extends up Broadway to the Dimmick Memorial Library. Downtown has been home to amazing architecture and thriving business for over 150 years. This work of art was created by local artist Emerson L. Freese, a brilliant illustrator who traces family to old Mauch Chunk. Well-known for his super-realistic wildlife art, Mr. Freese has produced several local illustrations, most notably a steam train-inspired ‘Jersey Central’ (2005) as well as a poster - ‘The Doors of Jim Thorpe’- was used by local non-profits as a fund-raiser. Formerly named Mauch Chunk, the town started as a transportation hub for anthracite coal: first based on canals, then on railroads. Once one of the richest places in America, it is the Carbon County seat and has had a storied past that includes miners and millionaires, hangings and high society, depression and renaissance. Today the town boasts small businesses owned by people that love living here, and is visited by many thousands who enjoy experiencing the history and adventure. In this stylized view, notice that the
buildings are exactly as they appear in real life, but there are two
horse-drawn wagons mixing with vehicles from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s - has
time stood still in Jim Thorpe? Come visit often, and see for yourself. |
